China's Long Qingquan broke a 16-year-old world record to claim gold in the men's 56kg weightlifting on Sunday.
Having lifted 137kg in the snatch, Long - winner of the gold medal in Beijing eight years ago - produced a clean and jerk lift of 170kg to register a record total of 307kg.
Long's clean and jerk performance represented an Olympic record in itself, with eventual silver medallist Om Yun-Chol having set the previous marker moments earlier.
The 25-year-old's efforts were in stark contrast to the torrid time he endured at the 2015 World Championships, where he failed to record a successful lift.
Turkey's Halil Mutulu had set the previous world record total of 305kg at Sydney 2000, and defending champion Om fell just two kilos short of that score himself in finishing second.
Olympic rookie Sinphet Kruaithong finished a relatively distant third, posting a total of 289kg.
