Noren into quarter-finals, Fitzpatrick's Ryder Cup hopes dented

Alexander Noren secured a place in the Paul Lawrie Match Play quarter-finals at Archerfield, but Matt Fitzpatrick was beaten by Alejandro Canizares in stunning fashion.

Second seed Noren - the Scottish Open champion - set up a meeting with fellow Swede Johan Carlsson in the last eight after battling from behind to beat Nacho Elvira.

Elvira was one up at the turn but lost on the 11th, 15th and 16th as Noren took charge of the match, and a brilliant par save on 17 secured a 2&1 victory.

Third seed Fitzpatrick suffered a blow to his Ryder Cup aspirations with a 4&3 loss to Canizares, despite playing 15 holes in three under.

The Spaniard was on another level as he picked up seven shots in a bogey-free round, with James Morrison awaiting in the quarter-finals.

Morrison continued his fine form at Archerfield by beating Michael Hoey 4&3, meaning he is yet to see the 16th this weekend and is 18 under through three matches.

Daniel Brooks eliminated top seed Chris Wood in the last 32 but could not get the better of Maximilian Kieffer, who ran out a 2&1 winner.

Kieffer's next opponent will be Oliver Fisher, while Anthony Wall and Haydn Porteous will contest the other quarter-final.
