Puig through to Eastbourne semi-finals

Monica Puig was the only player to seal her place in the semi-finals of the Aegon International on another rain-affected day in Eastbourne.

Puig beat Caroline Wozniacki to reach the last eight and the Puerto Rican saw off Kristina Mladenovic 7-6 (8-6) 4-6 6-3 at Devonshire Park before the weather impeded the schedule once again on Thursday.

Qualifier Puig reached the semi-final in Nottingham this month and is enjoying another long run on the grass in the final tournament before Wimbledon begins next Monday.

The world number 43 could only manage a first serve percentage of 51 and racked up nine double faults, but Mladenovic also struggled on serve and paid the price for not being as clinical as her opponent.

Puig, ranked 10 places below Mladenovic, saved 18 break points and secured six breaks to set up a semi-final against Agnieszka Radwanska or Dominika Cibulkova.

Radwanska looks her most likely opponent, as the top seed won the first set and was 3-2 up in the second with a break when play was suspended.

Karolina Pliskova surged into a 4-0 lead against Elena Vesnina before the rain returned once again, having beaten Misaki Doi in the third round earlier in the day.

Ekaterina Makarova ousted Andrea Petkovic in round three, but was unable to start her last-eight match against home hope Johanna Konta.
