Lionel Messi has become Argentina's all-time record goal scorer after netting a sublime free kick in Tuesday's Copa America semifinal match against the United States men's national team.
It took Messi just 32 minutes to find the net, hitting a sensational off the underside of the crossbar with deft precision, leaving goalkeeper Brad Guzan helpless. It was the 55th of Messi's national team career, passing Gabriel Batistuta for most ever.
The goal put Argentina 2-0 ahead in the contest after Ezequiel Lavezzi opened the scoring inside three minutes, with Barcelona star Messi creating the goal.
The Argentina captain, who's played for the national team since 2005, had drawn level with Batistuta's record of 54 goals with a strike against Venezuela in a 4-1 win in the quarterfinals of the competition Saturday.
Argentina is looking to end its 23-year trophy drought at the tournament, and thanks to Messi's brilliance are well on their way to back-to-back Copa finals.
