Vesnina dumps Watson out in Eastbourne

Elena Vesnina set up a second-round meeting with defending champion Belinda Bencic after a straight-sets win over Heather Watson at the Eastbourne International.

Vesnina - who lifted the title in 2013 - wasted little time in dispatching the British number two 6-2 6-3, Watson unable to convert a single break point in a disappointing display.

Another former champion, Ekaterina Makarova, is also into round two after beating British wildcard Tara Moore 7-5 6-4, while Naomi Broady fared no better as she was beaten 6-1 6-1 by Monica Puig.

Eugenie Bouchard looked in fine form as she looks to build some momentum ahead of Wimbledon, the Canadian enjoying a morale-boosting win over Varvara Lepchenko.

The 6-1 6-2 triumph was only Bouchard's third on grass since reaching the Wimbledon semi-final in 2014, setting up a second-round clash with 15th seed Irina-Camelia Begu.

Last year's quarter-finalist Andrea Petkovic got off to a winning start as she came from a set down to beat Saisai Zheng 5-7 6-2 6-4.

Meanwhile, Daria Gavrilova - who also reached the last eight 12 months ago - will need to comeback on Tuesday as dangerous conditions in Eastbourne stopped her clash with Anna Karolina Schmiedlova with the Australian 3-0 ahead in the first set.
