Bromwich to captain Kiwis against Kangaroos

Jesse Bromwich will captain New Zealand for Friday's Test meeting with Australia in Newcastle.

Melbourne Storm prop Bromwich takes the armband with regular skipper Simon Mannering missing out due to a facial injury sustained in New Zealand Warriors' 42-0 NRL defeat to the Storm last Monday.

Bromwich has made 17 previous Test appearances for the Kiwis and coach Stephen Kearney feels he warrants the prominent position within the team.

"You just need to look at Jesse's performances over the past two years, when he's elevated himself to one of the premier front rowers in our game and at international level," Kearney said.

"But it's more than his performances - it's everything that he brings to the table. He's a wonderful leader in his own right."

Issac Luke, who co-captained the national side with Adam Blair in the tour to England last year, has been dropped, along with Warriors team-mates Ben Matulino and Manu Vatuvei after a breach of the club's protocols.

Penrith wing Dallin Watene-Zelezniak has been offered another chance to make his debut for the Kiwis, with Parramatta Eels second-rower Manu Ma'u also looking for a first cap.

The playing line-up is set to be confirmed on Tuesday.
