Yohan Cabaye went from villain to hero for Newcastle fans and Villa almost won a game, but still lost

Here are some of the highlights from Saturday's games...

Newcastle fans had a pretty good day out

It's that time of the season where the cameras focus more and more on the reaction of fans at the wrong end of the table as their emotions spill over. Cue these Toon fans who could not have asked for a better afternoon in the Geordie sunshine. Their team won to drop their bitter rivals into the bottom three and they also saw a former player miss a penalty. Yohan Cabaye copped stick all afternoon before having a penalty saved by their third-choice, rookie goalkeeper Karl Darlow. Newcastle fans enjoyed it.

Jermain Defoe is ice cool

It was not all good news for Newcastle fans as Jermain Defoe offered a very late reminder that while he is knocking in goals Sunderland have every chance of avoiding relegation. The striker scored for the fourth successive Premier League away match when he smacked home a penalty in the third minute of injury time. No matter what happens between now and the end of the season he's a Mackems hero.

Badly timed protest of the day

It is also that time of the season where the future of managers come under the microscope. Everton boss Roberto Martinez is under the pump at the moment and Toffees fans decided that the best way to remind him of that fact was to rent a plane and get it to fly past Goodison Park with a trailing banner that read: 'Time to go Roberto'. It might have had a more significant impact if they didn't choose to hire the plane the day Everton ended their seven-game winless run.

Implosion of the day

You guessed it, Aston Villa. If this was Football Manager Villa fans would have reset this season a long time ago. As it is they endured yet another afternoon of frustration as they led heading into the 90th-minute only for Troy Deeney to bag a couple of times and condemn then to a 3-2 defeat. Still Villa did at least provide a new addition to the Chris Kamara blooper reel. Although, to be fair to Kammy it really was an 'Unbelievable Jeff!' moment when Villa opened the scoring.

Nostradamus moment of the day

Give this man a raise! Miles Starforth is the Newcastle correspondent at the Shields Gazette and moments after tweeting this, Andros Townsend promptly smashed in the free-kick to give Newcastle a valuable 1-0 win over Crystal Palace. The three points move the Magpies out of the relegation zone at the expense of rivals Sunderland.

Tweet of the day

If you get a chance to see Dimitri Payet's run for West Ham's third goal in their comfortable win over West Brom then you won't be disappointed. The France international again lit the way for a Hammers win and, whisper it quietly, they have sneaked into the top five. We still can't rule out the prospect of Champions League football coming to Upton...err....the Olympic Stadium next season.
