Dwayne Bravo became the first bowler to take 300 Twenty20 wickets and Aaron Finch made a rapid half-century as the Gujarat Lions beat Kings XI Punjab by five wickets on their Indian Premier League debut.
Showman Bravo gave yet more renditions of his 'Champion' dance in Mohali on Monday as the all-rounder claimed figures of 4-22 to restrict Kings XI to 161-6, eight days after strutting his stuff following West Indies' World T20 final victory against England.
The Windies star turned the game by dismissing the dangerous Glenn Maxwell (2) and David Miller (15) in the same over before Finch (74 off 47 balls) and Dinesh Karthik (41 not out from 26) starred with the bat in an impressive start for the IPL new boys.
It had all started so well on home soil for Kings XI, with Murali Vijay (42) and Manan Vohra (38) getting them off to a flyer by putting on 78 for the first wicket in quick time.
Vijay dispatched Pradeep Sangwan for six in the second over and stroked a glorious cover drive to the boundary from the next delivery, then Bravo gave Vohra a life when he dropped a difficult chance diving forward in the deep.
Bravo made amends after Ravindra Jadeja (2-30) got rid of both openers, foxing Maxwell with a yorker and repeating the trick with a slower ball two deliveries later to see the back of Kings XI skipper Miller and reach the 300 landmark.
Marcus Stoinis (33 from 22) chipped in, but his fellow Australian Finch put on a show of power and precision which included 12 boundaries after Brendon McCullum went without scoring.
Opener Finch was eventually stumped off Pardeep Sahu, but a classy innings from Karthik got the Lions home with 14 balls to spare.
