Yankees crush Astros, Martinez homers again


The New York Yankees crushed the Houston Astros 16-6 in MLB on Wednesday as the season's first grand slam was hit.

The Astros' George Springer hit the grand slam, but his Astros were well beaten as Starlin Castro (five RBIs) and Mark Teixeira (four) led the Yankees.

Steven Souza Jr powered the Tampa Bay Rays as they split their four-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays courtesy of a 5-3 win.

Victor Martinez hit another pinch-hit homer as the Detroit Tigers overcame the Miami Marlins 7-3 and the Milwaukee Brewers edged the San Francisco Giants 4-3.

The Seattle Mariners beat the Texas Rangers 9-5, the Colorado Rockies were 4-3 winners against the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Cleveland Indians got past the Boston Red Sox 7-6.

Chris Davis homered in the Baltimore Orioles' 4-2 win over the Minnesota Twins, the Los Angeles Dodgers shut out the San Diego Padres 7-0 and the Pittsburgh Pirates swept the St Louis Cardinals thanks to a 5-1 victory.

The Oakland Athletics enjoyed a 2-1 victory against the Chicago White Sox, the Cincinnati Reds walked off with a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies and the Washington Nationals beat the Atlanta Braves 3-1.


Souza was a perfect four-for-four with two homers and four RBIs against the Blue Jays. His second homer, a three-run shot in the eighth inning off Arnold Leon, gave the Rays a lead they would not relinquish.


The Reds' Scott Schebler hit a sharp liner with the bases load to plate Eugenio Suarez and Tyler Holt, giving the Reds a walk-off win in the ninth against the Phillies.


Martinez became the first player since 1914 with pinch-hit homers in his club's first two games, according to MLB.


Pitchers Jake Peavy and Alex Wood are starting as the Dodgers look to improve to four from four when they visit the Giants.

John Lackey makes his first career start for the Chicago Cubs, who are 2-0 heading to the Diamondbacks.
