Ospreys and Wales' James sidelined following eye surgery

Ospreys and Wales prop Paul James has been ruled out of action for an undefined period after undergoing eye surgery.

James, part of Wales' Six Nations squad, was referred to a specialist after sustaining an injury during the 25-16 Pro12 defeat at home to Scarlets last weekend.

The region confirmed the 33-year-old had an operation on his eye, but gave no indication of a possible return date.

"As part of Paul's routine post-match medical check on Saturday, the doctor identified an eye problem and referred him to a specialist for consultation. His advice was that surgery was required to prevent the issue worsening," Ospreys medical performance manager Chris Towers said.

"Paul had an operation on Thursday. We'll continue to consult with the specialist and are still awaiting further details of his after care."

The problem casts doubt over James' availability to represent Wales in their tour to New Zealand in June.
