Montpellier up to second with sixth successive win
Montpellier continued their winning run in the Top 14 on Friday, closing to within two points of leaders Clermont Auvergne courtesy of a 19-3 home victory over Brive.
With Clermont and Toulon not meeting until Sunday, Montpellier had the opportunity to move up to second in the table at a sodden Stade Yves-du-Manoir.
Tries from Marvin O'Connor and Akapusi Qera ensured Jake White's men recorded a sixth successive victory, although a bonus point eluded them.
Benoit Paillaugue eventually put Montpellier ahead after 22 minutes, having missed an earlier penalty attempt prior to Gaetan Germain twice failing to split the posts for Brive.
The hosts then took advantage of Lucas Pointud's yellow card on the half-hour, Paillaugue adding a second three-pointer before O'Connor crossed for the game's opening try.
Germain did manage to succeed with a penalty attempt on the stroke of half-time, but Paillaugue responded in kind three minutes after the interval and Qera duly crossed to put the result beyond doubt.
