Galchenyuk seals Canadiens win, Hurricanes prevail in shoot-out

The Dallas Stars were handed their seventh loss in 10 games as they went down to the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 after overtime in the pick of the NHL's Tuesday action.

Alex Galchenyuk scored the winner for the Canadiens after the two sides were tied at 3-3 after regulation time.

The Stars shot into an early lead through Cody Eakin but Max Pacioretty levelled the scored in the first period.

Jason Spezza restored the Stars' lead just 17 seconds into the second period, but parity was restored not even 40 seconds later when Galchenyuk scored his first of the night, before Phillip Danault put the Canadiens a goal up only for Ales Hemsky to make it 3-3.

Galchenyuk scored just one minute, 59 seconds into overtime to seal the win, handing the Stars their eighth overtime loss of the season as the Canadiens improved to 31-30-6.

Carolina Hurricanes star Jeff Skinner scored in the final seconds to force overtime at home against the Ottawa Senators as Carolina went on to win in a shoot-out.

Skinner's slap shot completed a dramatic comeback after the Hurricanes had found themselves two goals down to efforts from Ottawa's Mark Stone and Ryan Dzingel, as Skinner and Jay McClement responded in the second period for the Hurricanes.

Smith scored 19:25 into the second period to give the Senators the lead but they could not hold on as Skinner scored with under one second left in the third.

Cam Atkinson scored a double to help the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Detroit Red Wings 5-3, while the New York Rangers accounted for the Buffalo Sabres 4-2.

Elsewhere, the New York Islanders got the better of the Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1 with Andres Lee scoring the winner, the Boston Bruins defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 1-0 after a regulation time shutout from both sides, the Nashville Predators were too good for the Winnipeg Jets in a 4-2 triumph and the San Jose Sharks dominated the Edmonton Oilers in a 3-0 win.
