Payne was handed his chance with the national team after impressing with Ulster since 2011, the 30-year-old making his debut against South Africa in November 2014.

He has scored two tries in his 12 caps, making two Rugby World Cup appearances and winning the Six Nations last year.

During his time with Ulster the New Zealand-born back has scored 14 tries in 63 matches in all competitions, and has been first-choice in Joe Schmidt's midfield in the current Six Nations.

"I am very happy to have signed a two year Irish contract to remain with Ulster Rugby," he told the Irish Rugby Union website.

"It has been an honour for me to not only pull on the Ulster jersey but to represent Ireland.
