Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting is wary of over-burdening Steve Smith after skippering the Twenty20 team was added to his Test and one-day international duties.
Aaron Finch was dumped as T20 captain in favour of Smith on Tuesday ahead of next month's ICC World T20 in India.
Smith now holds the captaincy in all three formats of the international game and Ponting, who also led Australia at Test, ODI and T20 level simultaneously, has a warning for the 26-year-old.
"The thing that might start taking its toll on Steve Smith is just how constant that role is now for him," Ponting told SEN radio on Tuesday.
"With T20, more than anything, you have to look a couple of overs ahead of the game.
"I think it'll start catching up with him pretty quickly. It did with me anyway.
"He's only new into the Test captaincy really and [played] a bit of one-day cricket here and there."
Australia will open their World T20 campaign against New Zealand on March 18, before facing a qualifier, Pakistan and hosts India in the Super 10 phase.
