Castleford Tigers captain Michael Shenton could miss the rest of the season with a knee injury, it has been confirmed.
Shenton sustained the problem during Sunday's Super League opener at Hull KR, with subsequent scans revealing an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
Coach Daryl Powell said: "It's a massive blow for us and we now need to see a response from a few other players within our team.
"Our leadership is going to need to develop across a few players. These things happen, but it is pretty tough to take."
Powell also expressed his disappointment at what he perceived to be a lenient grading of the John Boudebza tackle that caused the injury, while Shenton himself revealed his frustration at having his campaign cut short.
"I've had a great pre-season and felt fresh coming into the season so to have it cut short from a reckless challenge is difficult for me to swallow but I'll be doing all I can off the field to support the boys through this season," he commented.
Castleford drew 16-16 with Rovers in their season opener.
