Rhinos lose skipper McGuire for two months

Leeds Rhinos will be without captain Danny McGuire for the World Club Challenge against North Queensland Cowboys due to a knee injury.

McGuire failed to return for the second half of the Super League champions' season opener against Warrington Wolves on Thursday and was a helpless bystander as the Rhinos were beaten 12-10 by Warrington Wolves at Headingley.

The 33-year-old took over the captaincy from Leeds legend Kevin Sinfield, who switched codes to join Yorkshire Carnegie at the end of last season, but he does not expect to lead the Rhinos out again for another 'couple of months' after scans on his knee.

His diagnosis means he will be unavailable to meet the Cowboys on February 21, while also potentially missing eight Super League matches - including games with Wigan Warriors and St Helens.

"Thanks for all the messages last night decent news back from scan so hopefully only miss a couple of months," he posted on Twitter.

"Was so proud to lead the lads out but back down to earth with a bang but that's our sport and why we love it. Just work hard and get back asap!!"
