England opener Alex Hales is in doubt to play the third Test with South Africa in Johannesburg after becoming the latest player to be struck down by illness.
Both James Taylor and Chris Jordan have suffered from a stomach bug since the drawn Test in Cape Town, and Hales - who has scored 101 runs in his four innings on tour - is now also unwell ahead of day one at the Wanderers on Thursday.
His absence could see Nick Compton promoted to open the batting alongside Alastair Cook, with Gary Ballance an option to come in further down the order.
"Alex Hales has got a bit of a bug, yesterday and today," said Cook. "He's come for a hit and he'll go back after that so he doesn't infect the rest of us.
"We'll have to wait and see on him, but he's having a hit so he can't be too bad. It seems to strike a bit randomly. Nick had it the other day and he's fine.
"You can't do anything about it as a captain, the medical team are on it.
"It's just a virus bug, so it's hard to stop. If it happens in the game then it's bad luck."
