Dale Steyn has been ruled out of the third Test between South Africa at England in Johannesburg due to a shoulder injury, coach Russell Domingo has confirmed.
The fast bowler missed the majority of the recent 3-0 series defeat in India with a groin injury but returned to fitness in time for the opening Test against England in Durban.
However, after sustaining a shoulder injury during the 241-run defeat at Kingsmead, he was unable to recover in time for the second Test in Cape Town, which ended in a draw.
As the Proteas look to level the series, which they trail 1-0, they will have to make do without Steyn when the third Test starts at the Wanderers on Thursday.
"I don't think it's the end of Dale Steyn. All players will experience some sort of niggles," Domingo said.
"He is a great athlete. He is as fit as they can come. We know he is a great bowler. He is the best bowler in the world.
"We haven't had him since the first Test in India tour and that has been disappointing."
