Ovechkin helps Capitals extend winning run

Alex Ovechkin reached 20 goals for the NHL season with his double against the Buffalo Sabres, as his Washington Capitals extended their winning run to nine with a 5-2 triumph.

The Capitals went a goal down to a Brian Gionta effort in the first period, and were 2-1 behind by the end of the second after Justin Williams equalised for the Capitals, only for Zemgus Girgensons to put the Sabres back in front.

But the Sabres could not keep up with the Capitals in the third period as Ovechkin scored two to add to goals from Marcus Johansson and Andre Burakovsky.

The New York Rangers had five different scorers in a 5-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The scores were tied at 2-2 at the end of the second period, but the Lightning could not live with the Rangers in the third as Dominic Moore, Viktor Stalberg and Rick Nash all scored to take the game away from Tampa Bay.

Two first-period goals from Mike Cammalleri helped the New Jersey Devils to a 3-0 win over the Ottawa Senators, while the Toronto Maple Leafs required a shoot-out to defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2.

In the final action of the day, the San Jose Sharks defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 4-2.
