Julia Mancuso is the latest woman to be ruled out of the 2015-16 FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup due to an ongoing hip injury.
The 2006 Olympic giant slalom gold medallist has opted to undergo surgery on Wednesday to resolve the problem and give her the best chance to make the 2018 Games in Pyeongchang.
In a statement from the US Ski Team no timescale was given on Mancuso's return, but she will miss the entire season, as will defending overall champion Anna Fenninger.
"Julia has taken a very smart approach to her hip injury," said US Ski Team medical director Kyle Wilkens. "We used this year's prep season to exhaust all conservative treatment.
"Unfortunately, those efforts were not successful and she has elected to go forth with surgery."
Mancuso added: "If I were to try to push through, get more treatments and try to ski this season, I would just be setting myself back towards the real goal, which is Pyeongchang 2018.
"My goal is to be strong enough to free ski at the end of March, but conservatively, it depends on the outcome of the surgery."
