Size Difference Between Farm's Biggest and Smallest Foals Is Almost Unbelievable

Anyone who's cared for a pet understands how much work it is to own an animal, but only farmers know what it's like to care for a whole flock--or even a whole barnyard--of critters. It can take the whole day just to make sure everyone's taken care of, but watching animals thrive is worth all of the work and time.

Springtime is one of the busiest times at any farm, especially when new babies are arriving. Horse owner Katie van Slyke is helping her mares wrap up an exciting foaling season, but not before welcoming both the biggest and smallest foals she's ever seen!

On April 7, Katie give her followers a size comparison between the smallest miniature horse foal, Squirt, and the large newborn foal who has yet to be named. To say that people are impressed is an understatement!

Woah! Little baby Squirt is so unbelievably tiny--I nearly squealed when I saw him! The tiny ball of sass wanted nothing more than to run around and play instead of standing still for a video, but he did a great job if you ask me. He may be a miniature horse, but he's got a full-sized personality!

I'm not sure how Katie can get anything done with such precious baby animals around, but it makes it even more difficult when foaling season brings so many babies at once. Fortunately, Katie is an experienced equestrian, and the last birth of the season went exactly by the book. Indy's baby may be the largest of the year, but that's the only surprise he had in store for his new family!

And what a surprise it was. That baby horse is absolutely huge! At birth, he's already too big for Katie to carry, so one can only imagine how big he will be when he's fully grown.

What Is the Largest Horse Breed?

If you're used to spending time around cats, dogs, and other small animals, any horse can seem massive. They only seem taller when you're riding a horse, but the biggest horses out there aren't usually used for riding.

Shire horses hold the title of the world's largest horse breed. When fully grown, these English draft horses can measure up to 19.2 hands high. One hand equals 4 inches, so that makes Shire horses 76.8 inches, or 6 and a half feet tall! And remember, these measurements only go to the top of the horse's shoulders--not their head.

While Indy and her baby are beautiful black horses, they are not Shire horses or any particularly massive breed. Even so, that baby boy is huge, and maybe he could one day give a big draft horse a run for its money!
