The Royal Mint has announced a new Sovereign collection to celebrate the King’s coronation, featuring a unique crowned coinage portrait of Charles III.

The coronation sovereign collection will be available to order on Monday and those interested are advised to be ready to place their orders from 9am. The Royal Mint is anticipating high demand for these coins.

The portrait was designed exclusively for The Royal Mint and is only available as part of the Coronation UK Coin Collection.

The Sovereign has become The Royal Mint’s flagship coin and will be the first one featuring the King wearing his crown.

The reverse design features the traditional Benedetto Pistrucci design that has been on The Sovereign since 1817 and the iconic George and the Dragon scene has become synonymous with the coin. The Sovereign has been struck for kings and queens since 1489.

"The coronation of His Majesty King Charles III marks the culmination of a 74-year journey to the throne and symbolises one of the most momentous occasions in modern British history. A huge global spectacle, the ceremony itself marks the dawning of new chapter for the British monarchy, as His Majesty The King is crowned alongside Her Majesty The Queen Consort.

"Now, you can commemorate this landmark event with the new Coronation Sovereign 2023 Collection celebrating The King’s coronation," the Royal Mint said.

From coins to banknotes, King Charles III's portrait has begun to appear on our money.

Fifty pence coins featuring the image of King Charles are already in circulation, with 4.9 million coins being distributed across 9,452 Post Office branches nationwide.

Some 9.6 million 50p coins will eventually enter circulation, in line with demand. The King’s effigy has been created by sculptor Martin Jennings and personally approved by Charles III.

Banknotes featuring the King have been revealed by the Bank of England, with plans for them to enter circulation in mid-2024.

King Charles will become only the second monarch in British history to feature on a bank note.

Existing notes will still be accepted in shops after the new notes begin to circulate.

The Bank of England added that following guidance from the royal household to keep the environmental and financial impact of the change to a minimum, it would only print new banknotes to replace those that are worn and when needed to increase notes in circulation.
