Rock legend Taylor Hawkins dies, aged 50

Rock legend Taylor Hawkins has died, aged 50.

The American musician shot to fame as the drummer for Alanis Morissette during her meteoric rise in the mid 1990s but is best known for his time as the drummer for rock band Foo Fighters for more than two decades.

The band put out a statement on Saturday afternoon, paying tribute to the artist.

"The Foo Fighters family is devastated by the tragic and and untimely loss of our beloved Taylor Hawkins," it said.

"His musical spirit and infectious laughter will live on with us all forever. Our hearts go out to his wife, children and family, as we ask that their privacy be treated with the utmost respect in this unimaginably difficult time."

It is not yet clear what caused the death.

The drummer was reportedly found dead in his hotel room in Bogotá, Colombia. The band has cancelled its planned performance in the city, a band representative confirmed to The Rolling Stone.

Tributes began flowing online for the rock icon minutes after the Foo Fighters statement was posted.
