Rescue Turkey Being Gently Lulled to Sleep with Music Is So Calming

Music has always been therapeutic for humans. But we still know so little about how music impacts animals. At the Gentle Barn animal sanctuary, it seems like we have the answer for at least one animal — a turkey named Harmony. The bird was recently caught having a moment while being serenaded by a guitarist in now-viral video online.

Harmony was really feeling the tunes as the video shows.

The turkey looked completely at peace as an employee strummed a guitar and sang behind her. Her eyes were closed and you could tell that she was so calm.

"Watch our turkey fall asleep during music therapy," the video's onscreen caption reads.

The Gentle Barn explained that Harmony was rescued during Thanksgiving, so the music has a purpose.

"We work hard to heal animals like her through any pain and trauma," the text overlay states. "Music therapy helps her relax and makes her feel safe."

In fact, Harmony felt so safe that she eventually nodded off. It really did the trick.

Harmony's nap made the comments section feel something too. "This is the world I want to live in," wrote one person. "This makes me cry. I love this for her," someone else added. "This is just so heartwarming," a third person chimed in. "Awwww music truly is universal," one commenter gushed.

Therapeutic Programs at Gentle Barn

If you're unfamiliar with the Gentle Barn, the sanctuary cares for and rehabilitates animals in their several locations across the country. The organization runs many different therapeutic programs for both the animals they care for and the many visitors they receive every single year.

Cow hug therapy is a program that is almost a dream come true. Guests are allowed to have their very own cuddle session with one of the Gentle Barn's many cows, with the hope that it can find a little comfort and protection. Visitors with depression, anxiety, loneliness, or grief especially will benefit from this program.

Similarly, equine therapy can provide comfort when times are tough. Horses can help bolster confidence and help practice leadership skills. Participants will often find that they are more aware of their bodies as they groom and care for horses. It can also be soothing to connect with the horse themselves.

If just being around animals is therapy enough, barnyard therapy might be for you. Simply being able to hold a chicken, pet a goat, or give a pig some belly rubs can really be beneficial.

Animals can lighten you load and be a source of connection. They really do make everything better.
