Richard Armitage has said some UK travellers ran to hide in WHSmiths at Stansted when he filmed dramatic scenes for Red Eye at the airport.

It's easy to see how terror was struck into the heart of holidaymakers to see Armitage jump on the tables and shout out for help while filming in his character Dr Matthew Nolan in the ITV thriller. His character is just moments away from being arrested and being taken away from police. He shouted out to the crowd in Stansted that he is being wrongly extradited on suspicion of murder.

It returns with the second episode this weekend so it's no surprise the stars of the show were appearing on This Morning to discuss the plot on Friday. Armitage spoke about the jaw-dropping moment on the This Morning sofa as he joined his co-stars Lesley Sharp and Jing Lusi. The actor admitted the TV crews have to be careful not to "traumatise" onlookers while filming.

Dermot O'Leary asked the question all of us wanted to know about the thought provoking scene in the opening episode of Red Eye. "Those are real punters right?" He asked.

Armitage shed some light on how the filming went down at Stansted airport. He said that some people run to take cover in WHSmiths while he shouted at the crowd but there were a few people who were in on the filming secret.

He said on the This Morning sofa: "There are a small group of background artists around me but you sort of only get one or two gos at doing it before the public twig to what you are doing.

"There are a few warning signs up saying filming is happening but of course no one is paying attention anymore. You have to be careful not to traumatise people. There were a few punters running into WHSmiths going, 'There's a man being arrested.'"

After the arrest, Armitage's character is flown on a plane from the UK to China but things take a sinister turn when one of the passengers dies. We can't wait to see what happens next. There are some big mysteries to solve in Red Eye which will unfold over the next few weeks while the show airs on TV.

The ITV thriller has courted the attention of the nation with its intrigue and shocking plot lines. However, critics were divided over Red Eye's opening episode. Among the critics, William Mata wrote in the Evening Standard that Red Eye was a "tired thriller".

Mata penned: "Red Eye desperately wants to be Locke, Steven Knight’s 2013 thriller where Tom Hardy’s character works out his personal and professional struggles while driving down the M6. Instead of that originality we have a tired thriller that might just about service you for a red eye flight of your own if there is nothing else on."

In the same vein as the Evening Standard, Nick Hilton said Red Eye was boring in The Independent. Hilton wrote: "Silly, sure; derivative, yes; but just about watchable – even if only in the way that the in-flight map is watchable after a few too many bloody marys."

But everyone's view differs it seems because Anita Singh had praise for Red Eye in The Telegraph. She wrote: '"If you’re the kind of person who watches a drama and cries: 'But that would never happen!' then this one is best avoided. But if you’re in the mood for some mindless fun, then buckle up.

"What can I tell you? It’s the kind of drama in which the intelligence services want to shred company documents without anyone knowing, then walk out of the company’s front door in full view of the public carrying the shredded paper in see-through boxes."
