A pub owner has described how his staff and customers rushed to help a woman killed in an alleged hit-and-run outside on a busy Friday night.

Police were called to Ormskirk Road in Pemberton, Wigan, at around 9.20pm on Friday night after a Land Rover Freelander ploughed into a group of pedestrians on the pavement.

Greater Manchester Police said a woman in her 40s was taken to hospital but later died, while two other male pedestrians suffered serious injuries.

The driver failed to stop at the scene, the force said.

Tony Callaghan, who runs the Fifteens pub in Pemberton where the incident happened, told how his staff and customers rushed to help.

He told the Manchester Evening News: "Our customers and staff tended to the people who were injured and they were giving first aid to the lady who sadly lost her life.

"I didn't know the lady but I do know she was visiting family for the weekend and wasn't from the area."

He said he had spoken to staff who witnesses the incident and offered them support and counselling, or time off work, adding: "We are a close knit team and we will stick together."
