Princess Beatrice's baby daughter Sienna has an unlikely meaning behind her name

Princess Beatrice and husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi announced they had called their baby daughter Sienna Elizabeth this week.

Now, the sweet meaning behind the name has been revealed – as well as how the newborn, who arrived late last month, has already shown that she has inherited the striking red hair of the maternal side of her family.

According to Hello!, the name pays special tribute in two ways to the baby's grandmother Sarah Ferguson.

A family friend told the magazine: "They were looking for an Italian name which started with an 'S' for Sarah, to honour the duchess, and also reflected the golden rust colour of both the duchess's hair colour and Beatrice's, which the new baby shares."

Indeed, the word 'sienna' describes an earth pigment used in painting, and it originates from the Italian city of Siena, due to the reddish-brown clay that comes from the area.

Her middle name Elizabeth honours, more obviously, great-grandmother the Queen.

Beatrice, 33, shared the happy news on her Twitter account on Friday, alongside an adorable image of her newborn's footprints.

She wrote: "We are delighted to share that we have named our daughter Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi."

Referencing her husband's five-year-old son Christopher from a previous relationship, the new royal mother added: "We are all doing well and Wolfie is the best big brother to Sienna."

In his own post on Instagram, her 38-year-old other-half posted: "Feeling so much love and gratitude for my amazing wife, baby Sienna and Wolfie.

"These are the days I never want to forget. This week, a friend said to me the sweetest saying... that with every child you grow a whole new heart."

Sienna, who is now 11th in line to the throne and Her Majesty's 12th great-grandchild, was born on 18 September at London's Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.

Her parents became engaged during a trip to Italy in September 2019, and married in the grounds of Windsor Castle in July 2020 after their nuptials were delayed due to the pandemic.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also paid tribute to their daughter's great-grandmother and late grandmother when they named her Lilibet Diana in June.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made the revelation at the same time as announcing her birth at a California hospital.

Similarly, Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank named their son, who arrived in February of this year, August Philip Hawke.

The royal revealed that their baby boy, who was born just weeks before Prince Philip passed away age 99 in April, is named after "his great-grandfather and both of his great x5 grandfathers".
