Decking the halls (figuratively speaking) is an activity we look forward to when Christmas comes knocking. Hanging up strings of twinkling lights, choosing baubles and placing festive ornaments around the home brightens up the dark winter days and gets our creative juices flowing.

But often, it can be hard to decide what kind of Christmas decorating theme to go for because there are so many to choose from. With so many influencers on social media providing so much inspiration, some people may feel overwhelmed about picking their decor.

In times like these, we turn to the experts for help. Interior experts Hiatt Hardware have identified five Christmas decor trends that will be big this year, and great news - there’s one to suit every taste, from loud and proud to minimalist chic.

Ryan Calvert, product expert at Hiatt Hardware, said: “Creating a holiday space that brings you comfort and cheer is what's important, whether you have an all-pink aesthetic or classic, vintage decorations. These trending styles should act as a guide to choosing the theme that’s perfect for you, whilst incorporating popular aesthetics for this holiday season!”

I’m dreaming of a pink Christmas

According to Hiatt Hardware, the leading interior decor trend this festive season is pink. The vibrant colour had a huge moment this year with the highly anticipated release of the Barbie movie, and it appears it’s here to stay for Christmas too.

The trend has seen a combined annual Google search and TikTok views amassing more than 54.9 million mentions. It’s a unique choice, but there are plenty of options to choose from - from pink garlands and baubles to completely pink Christmas trees.

“Whether it’s vibrant or pastel pink, this aesthetic offers a modern, feminine touch to an otherwise classic colour scheme, especially when paired with silver,” the experts suggest.

Go vintage

A vintage Christmas theme is also proving popular, with combined Google searches and TikTok views of over 31.1 million. Maximalists who love a traditional red, white and green colour scheme are particularly fond of this theme, as it gives lots of wiggle room for creativity and experimentation.

“Playing on sentimentality and nostalgia, a vintage Christmas look can be achieved with mismatched baubles, bright lighting and a splash of colour in every corner of the room. It’s perfect because it complements most, if not all, wood and metal finishes, so it will easily match your existing home decor.”

Farmhouse chic

This theme has a combined total of over 4 million searches on Google and TikTok views, so it’s definitely one to take notice of. Rustic, country charm is the name of the game here, so think natural, earthy tones combined with accents of traditional Christmas colours like red, white and green.

“To achieve this look, choose items with plaid patterns, such as throw pillows or stockings, wooden beaded tree decorations, wooden accents in ornaments and hints of natural green wreaths and garlands.”

Feeling blue

With more than 3 million Google searches and TikTok views, a blue Christmas interior trend could be just the ticket for anyone who wants loads of colour but isn’t keen on pink. Using blue as a focal point of colour can make a big statement in the home, and could really complement a snowy Christmas outside.

The experts recommend using different shades of blue to “prevent a flat, 2D look from developing, whilst achieving a wintry and cool effect”.

Wintry woodland wonderland

Finally, a woodland Christmas theme has garnered more than 1.7 million Google searches and TikTok views, and shows how many people are keen on bringing nature into their homes.

This style leans heavily on nature-inspired ornaments in the shape of woodland creatures, like squirrel statues and acorn baubles.

“Woodland decor embraces warm, autumnal tones of rust, plum, chocolate and fern shades, and is perfect for those looking to create a cosy, warmth-filled home.”
