Paramedic rushed to hospital after ambulance overturns

An investigation has been launched after a paramedic was rushed to hospital when an ambulance transporting a patient on an emergency call overturned during a crash.

Police, ambulance and fire crews all rushed to the scene after the emergency vehicle was involved in the smash with a car in Leicester at 6.25am on Thursday morning.

The patient on board was transferred into another ambulance to continue their journey to hospital following the collision at a crossroads on Welford Road.

Two clinicians were inside the ambulance and one of the crew was taken to hospital for treatment to injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

Describing the scene, one witness, who did not want to be named, said: "I didn't see what happened but just saw the aftermath and the place was swarming with emergency vehicles.

"It wasn't that busy with traffic that time in the morning but it soon caused rush hour gridlock.

"It's not something you expect to see outside your home, it was pretty shocking and I just hope nobody was seriously hurt."

Leicestershire Police has launched an investigation into the crash and is urging any witnesses or those with information to get in touch.

A force spokesperson said: "Officers were called shortly before 6.25am today to a report of a collision involving a car and an ambulance.

"Inside the ambulance were two clinicians from the East Midlands Ambulance Service and a patient.

"One of the crew members is being taken to hospital with injuries not believed to be life threatening or life changing.

"No one else has been injured."

Charlotte Walker, East Midlands Ambulance Service's head of operations for Leicestershire, said: “The patient on board the ambulance at the time of the collision continued their journey to hospital in another ambulance.

"Following an assessment of both ambulance crew members involved in the collision, one of the crew has also been taken to hospital via ambulance.”

A spokesperson for Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said: "Our teams safely extricated all people in the vehicles and then made the vehicles themselves safe."
