One killed and two seriously hurt in three lorry crash on motorway

A three lorry crash that killed one person has led to the closure of parts of the M5.

The large goods vehicles collided on the southbound carriageway between junctions 13 and 14 in Gloucestershire at approximately 5am this morning.

One of the drivers died and the other two were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police said two of the vehicles were set alight as a result of the crash.

Gloucester Constabulary said in a statement: “Police were called shortly before 5am with reports of a serious collision involving three large goods vehicles on the southbound carriageway, near to Michaelwood Services.

“Emergency services are in attendance, including Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service due to two vehicles being alight.

“Motorists are being warned that closures are likely to remain in place throughout the day due to the seriousness of the incident and ongoing collision investigation.

“The drivers of the two other vehicles have been taken to Southmead Hospital in Bristol.”

Police said both directions between junction 13 Stroud and junction 14 Thornbury would probably be closed throughout Saturday.

Highways England tweeted: “Delays of 30 minutes and slow moving traffic for approximately 2 miles approaching closures in both directions.

“Congestion is building along the #A38 diversion southbound.”

Anyone travelling either northbound or southbound and witnessed the collision is asked to report this to police online or on 101.
