Kevin Costner has spoken about the future of Yellowstone, admitting that he hopes it continues beyond season 5, part 2.

The show was confirmed to be ending last year after lead actor Costner departed the role of John Dutton, with the final batch of episodes set to arrive in November after multiple production delays.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight to promote his decades-in-the-making film Horizon: An American Saga, Costner isn't sure season 6 and beyond will happen — but he's cautiously optimistic.

He told the outlet: "I'd like to be able to do it but we haven't been able to. I thought I was going to make seven [seasons] but right now we're at five. So how it works out — I hope it does — but they've got a lot of different shows going on.

"Maybe it will. Maybe this will circle back to me. If it does and I feel really comfortable with [it], I'd love to do it."

The show's co-creator Taylor Sheridan previously explained that Costner left the show partly to finally make Horizon, but also due to disagreements with the network (Costner and Sheridan have had their own disagreements over the years, but have always resolved them).

Touching lightly on what could happen with his character in potential future seasons, Costner said that he "kind of had my own fantasy how it might be", but noted, "that's Taylor's thing".

He added: "I said as much to him a while back. I had thoughts how it could happen, but we just have to see."

Yellowstone season 5, part 2 will air on the Paramount Network in November 2024.
