While it’s expected to see plenty of garden wildlife at this time of year, one homeowner awoke to find something much more aquatic on her back patio.

A cheeky seal – known to locals as Dandy – was lounging in the summer sun on the back patio of a house in Billinghay, Lincolnshire, this week.

Pc Martin Green, who works for Lincolnshire Police’s wildlife team, was alerted to the unlikely sunbather after a friend called him to say “his mum had woken up and found the seal on the patio”.

Dandy had apparently managed go haul herself up the banks of the nearby river before entering the garden.

The seal then moved from the patio area and was discovered basking in sunshine on the lawn, Green said.

He added: "We checked her over and she was perfectly fine.”

RSPCA inspectors were later called to check on Dandy and, after finding that she was in good health, she was returned to the water where she “happily swam off”.

This is not the first time that Dandy has got up close and personal with the locals.

She was previously pictured on top of a paddleboard with a woman after she pulled herself onto the back during a lesson on the River Witham in Boston.

According to instructor Phil May, all students managed to stay on board during the lessons – despite the unusual passenger.
