Wolf Hall is returning for a second and final series, subtitled The Mirror and the Light, after eight years.

The BBC has announced production on the six-part conclusion will begin shortly, while the new actors joining Mark Rylance, Damian Lewis, Kate Phillips, Lilit Lesser and Jonathan Pryce will be announced "in due time".

Beginning 1536, the second series will chronicle the final four years of Thomas Cromwell's life as he becomes one of the most influential and feared men in the country.

Picking up where series 1 left off, Henry VIII has had his second wife executed, and is looking to move on with Jane Seymour. But his actions have left everyone fearing for their lives, with plans to remove the King being brewed up both abroad and at home.

Without much power beyond his smarts, Cromwell comes up with some radical ideas that will end up changing both society and his own fortunes.

"The Mirror and the Light picks up exactly where Wolf Hall ended, with the execution of Henry VIII's second wife, Anne Boleyn," director Peter Kosminsky said.

"I'm overjoyed to be able to reunite the extraordinary cast we were lucky enough to assemble for Wolf Hall, led by the brilliant Mark Rylance and Damian Lewis, with the original creative team of Gavin Finney (DOP), Pat Campbell (Designer) and Joanna Eatwell (Costume Designer).

"We are all determined to complete what we started – and to honour the final novel written by one of the greatest literary figures of our age, Hilary Mantel."

"Almost a decade on, we're delighted to have reunited this exceptional creative team and lead cast to conclude Mantel’s thrilling saga on the BBC."

Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light will air on BBC One and be streamed on BBC iPlayer in the UK, and on PBS Masterpiece in the US.
