Tornadoes have ripped through the US state of Kansas, leaving homes in pieces and residents hunkered down, in scenes reminiscent of the Wizard of Oz.

At least two people were reportedly injured in Overbrook, Kansas, when an RV they were in overturned during one tornado that produced winds of up to 100mph.

The tornado, with a width of 75 yards, touched down at 6.07am on Tuesday and remained on the ground for 20 minutes covering a span of 9.8 miles.

Large trees were ripped from their foundations and buildings used for farming across the rural county were also destroyed.

A total of at least five tornadoes were confirmed to have touched down in the state overnight and early Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Millions of Americans across Kansas and other Midwestern states Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri are still under storm warnings as more tornadoes remain possible.

In Iowa, one reported tornado tore an almost 7-mile path that inflicted minor damage to houses and land across the county.

Across all four states, more than 20,000 electric outages were reported on Tuesday, with Missouri being the worst affected.

As the storm system makes its way east, parts of Michigan, Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky are on alert, with hail, damaging winds and tornadoes possible.

Many flights across the country are being cancelled or rerouted.

On Tuesday morning, an American Airlines flight from Kansas City to Chicago returned to the airport because of a possible lightning strike.

While the flight landed safely and no passengers were injured, the airline told US media that the aircraft is being inspected for damage.
