Watch moment German fans think they've scored... only for Muller to miss big chance

This is the moment German fans went from ecstasy to despair in a split second after realising they had not scored against England in their Euro 2020 match.

Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling had put England ahead against their old foe in the game at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday evening.

German striker Thomas Muller closed in on the England goal and looked like he was certain to score.

With a clear shot on goal, Muller took the shot and German supporters cheered and celebrated, believing the ball had gone in.

However, Muller somehow dragged the shot just wide of the goal, with German celebrations going from joy to sorrow in a split second.

Footage shows fans with their heads in their hands after realising they had not equalised and the game was still England’s to lose.

Joy turned to despair as German fans realised Thomas Muller had not scored.

England striker Harry Kane secured victory for the Three Lions when he headed home a Jack Grealish cross in the 86th minute to make it 2-0.

It was a momentous win for England, sending ecstatic fans and celebrities partying into the night, while England’s media also celebrated the win on Wednesday’s front pages.

For Germany though, it was a disappointing end to their Euro 2020 campaign and also for departing coach Joachim Low after a 15-year stint in charge.

Low announced his decision to step down after this tournament earlier this year, but the 61-year-old would have been hoping he could have finished at Wembley for the final rather than the last-16 tie.

He said: “Disappointment is present, it will stay for a while, this is clear, you don’t forget about it immediately, you will need certain time but I am sure that there are a lot of positive things that I can take out of these 15 years.

“I want to thank the players who gave their best, the players who are not with us any more.”

England now have a quarter-final date with Ukraine, who beat Sweden on Tuesday night.

That tie will take place in Rome on Saturday night, with both semi-finals and the 11 July final back under the Wembley arch.

England boss Gareth Southgate, who missed the decisive penalty when England had lost to Germany in a shootout at the semi-final stage of Euro 96, said his team are now in a “dangerous moment” as they look to continue their run to the final.
