Five people suffered bite wounds and scratches when a bear went on a rampage through a town in Slovakia.

Local authorities are now hunting for the creature and want it killed.

Two men, two women and a 10-year-old child were attacked by the bear in Liptovsky Mikulas, which is in the north of the country.

One of the victims almost lost an eye, according to reports, which said the bear had crossed into the town from a forest and got lost in residential areas.

Footage on social media showed the animal marauding down roads and pavement, as pedestrians scream and drivers cower in their cars. It was also seen near a shopping mall.

In one terrifying moment caught on smartphone the bear is seen chasing someone down the street. The terrified person escapes by scrambling over a fence, leaving the frustrated bear lunging at the fence in fury after losing its prey.

Residents told not to leave urban areas

The animal remains at large after a police patrol chased it back into the forest. A special bear intervention team, equipped with a drone with thermal imaging has been dispatched to hunt it down.

Residents in the town, which lies on the Váh River and is close to Slovakia’s largest ski resort, Jasna, have been told not to leave urban areas, especially not late at night or in the early morning.

A bear hotline has been set up for people to call if they spot the wild animal.

There are up to an estimated 1,200 wild bears in Slovakia, with most living in the Tatra mountains close to Liptovsky Mikulas.

A 31-year-old woman died after falling down a slope while fleeing from a bear in the mountains in Belarus last week. She and her male companion were attacked while negotiating steep ravines and fled in separate directions. A search dog later found the woman’s body.
