Jomo Kenyatta was not the first of the numerous Africans (and a few Europeans) who recognised church involvement in the legacy of slavery and colonialism long ago (Letters, 4 March). For example, in a 1902 sermon, the influential Nigerian, Rev Dr Mojola Agbebi said: “European Christianity is a dangerous thing. What do you think of a religion … which points with one hand to the skies, bidding you ‘lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven’, and while you are looking up grasps all your worldly goods with the other hand, seizes your ancestral lands, labels your forests and places your patrimony under inexplicable legislations?”

• What a wonderful assortment of solo women travellers and great suggestions for the future (Letters, 7 March). Can I suggest the West Highland Way? All sorts chatted in the pubs each evening. A Californian couple doing it in the same leisurely 10 days as me kept telling people: “You must meet Margaret. She’s 83, you know.” So people would pop up from behind for a chat. I had a fantastic time.

• Roderick Stewart can’t think of anything the BBC does better than others (Letters, 4 March). Radio is the obvious answer. Radios 3 and 4 have concerts, documentaries, plays etc. The BBC employs several orchestras. It is vital to the cultural health of the country.
