Transfer deadline day LIVE: Fulham try to loan Armando Broja from Chelsea as window closes

Transfer deadline day came and went as the January window slammed shut and Premier League clubs raced to try and complete last-minute deals ahead of the 11pm deadline.

Armando Broja’s future was still yet to be decided as the window closed as Chelsea reportedly agreed a loan deal to send the striker to Fulham, who could do with some goals over the second half of the season, but no official confirmation had landed by the time the deadline passed. West Ham duo Said Benrahma and Pablo Fornals’ exits to Lyon and Real Betis respectively were in a similar situation.

A relatively quiet transfer deadline day mirrored the January window as a whole, with financial restrictions stopping Premier League clubs splashing the cash too much. Crystal Palace swooped for midfielder Adam Wharton in a reported £22m switch from Blackburn to mark the biggest Premier League move of deadline day, as the talented 19-year-old cost an upfront fee of £18m with a potential £4m of add-ons.

Burnley completed loan deals for two defenders as Montpellier’s Maxime Esteve and Lorenz Assignon from Rennes signed until the end of the season, while Nottingham Forest signed goalkeeper Matz Sels from Strasbourg and striker Enes Unal joined Bournemouth on loan from Getafe, with an obligation to buy.

“I would like to thank Matz who has been a true soldier for us all these years,” says Keller. “He was an exemplary goalkeeper and captain. But after almost six seasons here, he wanted a new challenge and expressed the wish to try his luck again in England.

“We are really pleased to welcome Enes to the club and believe he will add strength to our front line,” Bournemouth’s chief executive Neill Blake said on the club website.

“He’s proven that he can score goals in multiple different countries, and we believe he’s got the skillset to succeed in the Premier League.”

Veliz, 20, will now spend the second half of the campaign with the LaLiga club, but the deal is a straight loan with no option or obligation to make it permanent

Ex-Rosario striker Veliz is currently sidelined with a knee injury, although could return to full fitness later this month and will further his development in Spain alongside former Tottenham midfielder Erik Lamela.

Move over Marcus Rashford: Kobbie Mainoo is Manchester United’s new star

22:56 , Luke Baker

Just one normal day in the life of Manchester United is all we ask.

With the eyes of the world watching Marcus Rashford’s every move, it was another, better-behaved academy product from down the road who secured his anarchic side a truly remarkable victory that United did their utmost to undo.

Even though the tequila-swilling rogue arrowed a superb opener five minutes into a match he looked a long way from starting when called into a Carrington disciplinary meeting three days ago, star-in-the-making Kobbie Mainoo’s incredible winner, in the 97th minute, must not be forgotten amid all the Rashford furore.

David Moyes gives update on West Ham’s transfer business

22:47 , Luke Baker

West Ham were in Premier League action this evening and drew 1-1 with Bournemouth. After that match, manager David Moyes gave updates on the remaining transfer deals on deadline day.

Moyes told BBC Match of the Day: “I’m only just off the pitch, I’m not quite sure what’s been done. We know the talk from Betis [around Pablo Fornals] and I think Said Benrahma is in France doing a medical. I couldn’t tell you if that has been done tonight.

“I think a few things have been quite last minute. It’s a pretty awkward day to have to answer questions on the transfer deadline. We’re a country who like to do things late and there’s a lot of late deals that look like they’re happening today.”

Done deal! Isaac Hayden leaves Newcastle for QPR

22:00 , Luke Baker

Championship strugglers QPR have strengthened their midfield with the signing of Isaac Hayden on loan from Newcastle for the rest of the season.

Hayden has been out of favour on Tyneside for the last couple of years and spent last season at Norwich. He made 10 appearances for Belgian side Standard Liege during the first half of this campaign.

The ex-England Under-21 international brings significant Premier League experience, having played more than 100 times in the top flight, and hopes he can help preserve Rangers’ status in the second tier.

“It is obvious to see the position the club are in at the moment,” he said on the club’s official website. “But it’s a challenge that I feel I can add some value to, on and off the pitch - be an experienced player and be a leader to try and help the club stay in the league.

“Everyone knows what the Championship is like but if we can get a consistent run of performances, hopefully the points will come.

“I’ve looked at the squad and there are some really good players in it. There is definitely enough there but it is about us proving that on a matchday when it counts.”

Chelsea and Fulham still in talks over Armando Broja deal

20:46 , Luke Baker

The main deal we’re keeping an eye on for the rest of the evening is Armando Broja’s potential loan move.

Fulham have reportedly agreed a loan fee with Chelsea for Broja, The Independent understands, and will pay their West London rivals £750k. He has arrived at the Cottagers’ training ground to try and get the move over the line.

The deal includes a penalty fee of up to £4m if Broja does not play a specified number of games, as Chelsea look to ensure their asset isn’t stuck on the bench, and these negotiations are proving one of the final hurdles to completing the deal before tonight’s deadline.

Chelsea had initially sought £50m for a permanent transfer but could not find a suitor.

Bournemouth have allowed the Wales international to depart on a temporary basis after he started only twice under Andoni Iraola during the first half of the campaign.

Moore previously spent 18 months at Portman Road and, while he failed to score in 11 appearances in 2017, he returns with plenty of Championship and big-match pedigree.

He told Town TV: “It’s great to finally get it over the line because it’s been a long time coming during the window.

“I remember my first spell here and I’ve gone away and worked very hard on myself during that time, so I’m delighted to be back and can’t wait to get going.

“I was really excited when I spoke to everyone here and now I just want to meet the group, get out on the pitch and contribute.”

Leverkusen sign striker Borja Iglesias in bid to clinch title

19:45 , Lawrence Ostlere

Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen’s new signing Borja Iglesias is ready to boost their attack in the absence of injured striker Victor Boniface, and his arrival could not have been better timed with Bayern Munich awaiting them on Feb. 10.

Leverkusen will be looking to bounce back with a win at bottom club Darmstadt 98 on Saturday to make amends for their goalless draw against Borussia Moenchengladbach last week. Their lead over second-placed Bayern has been cut to two points and they will want to preserve that gap going into the crunch match against Bayern.

With the title race looking increasingly like a two-horse race as Bayern are 10 points ahead of third-placed VfB Stuttgart, Leverkusen know they cannot afford to drop points on Saturday.

“Until the season ends it is still a long, hard way,” said 31-year-old Spaniard Iglesias, who joined on a loan deal from Real Betis until the end of the campaign. “We are taking one step after the other. First of all I am looking forward to the game against Darmstadt on the weekend and then the coming weeks in Leverkusen.”

Boniface, who had scored 10 goals in 16 league games, will be out of action for at least three months after undergoing surgery on an adductor muscle injury he picked up while preparing with Nigeria for the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this month.

Leverkusen urgently need Iglesias’ efficacy in front of goal, having failed to score against Gladbach despite having 28 goal attempts compared to their opponents’ four.

“This is an ambitious team that wants to achieve something,” Iglesias said. “I will give my best to help this team.”

Often derided as lacking a winning mentality and nicknamed ‘Neverkusen’ for their inability to win titles, Leverkusen are unbeaten in 28 consecutive matches across all competitions this season.

Adam Wharton discusses reasons behind Crystal Palace move

19:30 , Luke Baker

Adam Wharton has revealed Crystal Palace’s track record for developing young prospects from the Championship was a big factor in him signing for the club.

Wharton completed a move to Selhurst Park from Blackburn on transfer deadline day, putting pen to paper on a five-and-a-half-year deal with the Premier League outfit.

England Under-20 international Wharton leaves Rovers after making 51 appearances for his boyhood club and will hope to follow in the footsteps of Michael Olise and Eberechi Eze in making the jump up from the second tier.

Wharton told Palace TV: “I’ve always wanted to play in the Premier League and to play for such a big club like Crystal Palace is a great honour.

“The way they’ve brought players from the Championship and developed them into world-class players in the Premier League is something that stood out to me, and it’s a big reason why I wanted to come here.”

Real Betis sell Luiz Henrique to Botafogo

19:15 , Lawrence Ostlere

Botafogo have signed Brazilian winger Luiz Henrique from Spanish side Real Betis for a Brazilian record fee, the club said on Thursday.

Financial details were not disclosed, but Spanish media said the Brazilian Serie A club had paid Betis a fee of about €20m (£17m) for the 23-year-old.

Botafogo said that the deal represented the highest transfer fee ever paid by a Brazilian club. The player has signed until the end of 2028.

Brazilian media reported the forward could leave Botafogo at the end of the season or in 2025 on loan to Olympique Lyonnais, with both clubs being owned by American businessman John Textor.

Henrique made 64 appearances for Betis, scoring four goals and providing 10 assists, after joining from Fluminense in 2022.

Betis are meanwhile set to sign Pablo Fornals from West Ham for around €8m.

Manchester United sell Norwegian midfielder to Werder Bremen

Manchester United have sold academy player Isak Hansen-Aaroen to Werder Bremen for an undisclosed fee.

The club were keen to keep the Norwegian 19-year-old, but his refusal to sign a new contract, with a deal that expires this summer, forced their hand. Hansen-Aaroen wants first-team opportunties and United had made it clear that would take time at Old Trafford.

The Independent understands United have included a sell-on clause in the transfer terms to ensure they get a slice of any future fee, should Bremen sell on Hansen-Aaroen for a big price.

EFL news: Doncaster succeed in appeal against transfer embargo

17:03 , Lawrence Ostlere

Doncaster’s three-transfer window fee restriction by the EFL has been reduced following an appeal.

League Two Rovers were issued with a £2,000 fine and the three-window fee restriction as a result of accumulating 30 days or more of late payments during the 12 months from July 1, 2023 to June 30, 2024.

It meant the club was prohibited from paying or committing to pay a transfer fee, compensation fee or loan fee for any player during either the current or next two transfer windows.

The club opted to appeal on the grounds that the restrictions imposed were disproportionate to the financial breaches, so the matter was referred to an independent disciplinary commission, which revised the sanctions.

A statement from the EFL said: “On review of the case, the commission has determined that the three-transfer window fee restriction is to stand, but with the second (August 2024) and third (January 2025) windows suspended and triggered upon a further breach. The club is still required to pay the £2,000 fine.”

Since then Villa have also lost Staniforth’s fellow midfielder Laura Blindkilde Brown, with the youngster joining Manchester City on transfer deadline day.

Ward told a press conference ahead of Saturday’s Women’s Super League home clash with Bristol City: “Lucy Stan and Laura Brown have been ever-present in our midfield, so it’s a massive hole. Lucy has been excellent for us.

“It’s an injury that requires intervention and we’ll get that done on Wednesday and get her ready for pre-season.”

England Under-23 international Blindkilde Brown, 20, made her move with Villa saying City had triggered a “substantial” buyout clause in her contract. It is reported City have paid £200,000.

Ward said: “I think naturally we’re disappointed with the Browny situation. When the call came in, I think the first thought is ‘absolutely no chance’.

“City hit that clause and then we sat down with Laura, and I think the fact that City’s midfield is in the position they’re in (with Jill Roord injured) and Laura’s got an opportunity to go in there and play straight away, go for a title and try to finish in the Champions League spots, it’s something for her as an individual she simply couldn’t turn down.

“She’s a fantastic talent. I think City have got a bargain. Personally I’m absolutely gutted that she’s no longer here.”

Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey has been linked with Tottenham and Bayern Munich in order to meet profit and sustainability regulations. And Marcus Rashford’s Manchester United future is in doubt after his latest fallout with manager Erik ten Hag, with one report suggesting Paris Saint-Germain are ready to revive their interest.
