Tesco and Co-op to shut early so staff can watch Euro final

England may win their first major football tournament since 1966 on Sunday and nobody wants to miss it. Some supermarkets are ensuring staff don't miss out by closing early to let people watch the game.

Tesco (TSCO.L) and Co-op supermarkets have said they will be closing stores earlier than usual on 11 July so that employees can watch England play Italy at Wembley Stadium in the final of the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament at 8pm UK time.

Tesco confirmed all its Express stores in England will close at 7.45pm on Sunday evening "to ensure all our colleagues can enjoy the big game." Express stores usually stay open until midnight.

Co-op tweeted that all it's convenience stores will close 15 minutes before kick-off. There are over 2,500 Co-op stores around the UK.

Regional consumer co-operative Southern Co-op told Yahoo Finance it will also be closing early and has put out posters to make its customers aware of the new timing. The co-op operates across 11 counties in the south of England and has around 200 convenience stores.

"The excitement has been building over the last few weeks in our stores and across the nation," Simon Eastwood, COO for retail at Southern Co-op, said.

"Many of us are going to be glued to our screens on Sunday so it was only right for us to close our doors a few hours early and let our colleagues join in if they want to. Our colleagues continue to do us proud everyday so this is another way of saying thank you."

Goldman Sachs' (GS) Euro 2020 probability model earlier predicted England will win the tournament.

Goldman’s Christian Schnittker said that “with Belgium out of the competition now, our model sees England as the favourite to win the Euros”.
