'Worst hotel ever!' Aol Travel readers share their stories
  • One hotel guest was horrified to find that there appeared to be an all-out gang war outside the hotel she had booked in San Francisco. "The hotel wasn't in a very nice area," Ellie tells us. "We were warned to only head out one way when we left the hotel, and get a cab if we came back late at night. We only stayed two nights - that was enough!"
  • AJ says he once found cockroaches in a hotel bed. Nice.
  • While on a family holiday in Crete, Sarah said she experienced a "nightmare" of a kids' club."There was only one staff member. One day they dressed up the children as pirates - they had black eye patches and scars painted on their face - but to our horror it was done in permanent black marker pen! For the rest of the holiday (such as it was) we knew which children had been at the kids' club as they all had the remains of black eye patches and scars in varying stages of fading!"
  • Jill says: "ending up in A&E and getting my head glued and leg stitched when bricks fell out of the wall seven floors above" was her worst hotel experience.
  • The last thing you expect when checking into a hotel after a long day travelling is to be told you can't have a wash. But that's what happened to Jacqueline. "We were asked to stop using the shower as it was flooding reception," she tells us.
  • "My wife and I booked a lovely four-poster room all singing and dancing for the night of our wedding, only to be told on arrival they had double booked and we ended up in a grotty room in the new section with cars at eye level. We were not impressed but happily 10 years on this year and we're still married" - Pete
  • When Garry left his credit card details as a deposit at a hotel near Disneyland Paris, he didn't expect his bank to phone and question his overseas spending when he returned to the UK. "The only thing we purchased using our card were duty free cigarettes but there was a £1,500 bill," he said. "The reception staff had used our details to book flights to Nice..."
  • "A hotel in Glasgow had bare wires, badly fitted doors with a space at the bottom, black mould in the shower and too many other issues to mention," says Angela. "And to top it off, there was screaming and shouting, and someone loudly having sex at the back of the hotel. Despite the hotel's great location we never ever went back there."
  • Mark says his worst hotel experience was "being basically accused of nicking a 'butterfly print' from the walls of a five-star Paris hotel."

  • "No window, dirty, bed bugs and apparently I could book by the hour," Joan tells us of a hotel she once checked in to in Manchester.
