Unusual places to watch films this summer (2015)
  • Flash your beach body on the rooftops of London this summer at Hot Tub Cinema. Enjoy panoramic views of the city skyline, champagne waiter service and, of course, your favourite film on the giant screen with the hottest alfresco cinema experience in the capital. Book a tub with friends or buy individual tickets an make some new ones. You'll also be treated to your very own tub waiter to refresh your drinks. 
  • OK, so this isn't really an outdoor cinema, but it's great so we wanted to include it. Yes you read that right. Edible Cinema in London is designed to elevate the movie magic and provide explosive entertainment alchemy. Mixing the tastes, aromas and textures of a film’s most famous scenes, you'll receive a selection of numbered boxes at the start of the experience, which you will be instructed to open throughout the showing.

  • Britain's stately homes are no strangers to the big screen, but did you know you can visit one for a night at the pictures? Burghley House is the perfect place to take the kids over the summer as it will air Disney films on a huge outdoor screen. For the adults, there will be a blast from the past with classics like Ghostbusters and Back to the Future. 
  • Whitecliff Bay Holiday Park in the Isle of Wight hosts regular open-air film screenings where the backdrop is one of the Isle of Wight’s most stunning beaches. The scenery sets the mood for family classics on show this summer, including Jumanji and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The comfy giant deck chairs are big enough for three members of the family to snuggle up in and will ensure you have a wonderfully relaxing time. 
  • Bringing movie night to remote and rural areas of Scotland, Screen Machine is an 80-seat mobile cinema that tours around 30 communities in the Highlands and Western Islands showing films such as Far from the Madding Crowd, Moomins on the Riviera and Avengers: Age of Ultron. The lorry stops in Eigg, Fort William, and Tighnabruaich, among many other picturesque locations in Scotland. 

  • Love picnics AND films? You'll want to book tickets to Picnic Cinema then which treats you to outdoor cinema experiences in extraordinary locations across the north of England. Watch classics, like Saturday Night Fever or horrors, like The Shining and Psycho. The allegedly haunted Muncaster Castle is one of the unique sites where film lovers can set up chairs and picnics for a wonderful movie experience.

  • If you're looking for London's trendiest cinema experience, it's the Rooftop Film Club, which lets you enjoy the very best of film in the coolest locations. Classic, cult and recent film releases are shown on rooftops including Queen of Hoxton in Shoreditch and The Roof Gardens in Kensington. Films for this summer include classics like Dirty Dancing and Sleepless in Seattle as well as new releases Whiplash and Wild. 
  • Take the kids to Swansea this summer, where they can cosy up with blankets and have a picnic in Castle Square, opposite Swansea Castle. Paddington, Frozen and How to Train Your Dragon 2 are three kids' flicks they won't want to miss at Swansea's Big Screen - the perfect way to keep them entertained outdoors for a few hours!

  • Every summer, iconic London arts and cultural centre Somerset House opens its doors to fans of comedy, romance, musicals, thrillers and much-loved classics. Presented in the magnificent 18th century courtyard complete with surround sound, it is heralded as one of the capital's best loved open-air cinemas. This year, the season includes classics like Roman Holiday, The Silence of the Lambs and The Graduate.

  • Cardiff Castle is a majestic medieval castle that was built by William the Conqueror. This summer the castle is hosting a mini film festival of three Hollywood blockbusters. Grab your blankets and picnic basket, and settle down in the castle grounds to watch Back to the Future, Monty Python and the Holy Grail or singalong classic Mamma Mia.
