The hottest cars from the Detroit Auto Show 2012
  • This compact SUV might have a winter sports theme, but it also hints at a possible performance version of the Q3. It is powered by a 314PS five-cylinder engine giving a 5.5-second 0-62mph time and a 163mph top speed.

  • A new 4.0-litre V8 slots beneath the W12 engine in the Continetal GT range offering 500bhp, but with better fuel efficiency.

  • American show debut for the latest 3 that is already winning acclaim from those who have driven it. The styling is a very gentle evolution of the existing model, but it is bigger outside and previewed here, it will be offered with a hybrid powertrain.

  • The North American Fusion previews the next generation Mondeo, due for launch in early 2013 in Europe; it was be simultaneously launched at Detroit and the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas shows where Ford see its priorities for this new model.

  • The much-rumoured new NSX finally broke cover at the Detroit Auto Show. The concept forms the basis of a production model that will arrive in the UK in 2013.

  • Hyundai's quirky new model has only just hit these shores, but Detroit previewed the hottest model - the Turbo. Power comes from a newly turbocharged 201bhp 1.6-litre Gamma four-cylinder engine and boasts 195 lb/ft of torque. UK specifications will be known at a later date.

  • Could this be the replacement for the limited-build LFA supercar? Designed by Toyota and Lexus in Newport Beach, California, this supercar concept is powered by what the company calls 'Advanced Lexus Hybrid Drive'.

  • The use of aluminium throughout the new SL means the new car, on sale in the UK from July, will be up to 140kg lighter than the outgoing model which dates back to 2003. A folding metal roof and choice of V6 and V8 power are among the highlights.

  • The roadster is basically a soft top version of the coupé launched last autumn. It promises to be great fun to drive, with the added advantage of extra luggage space when the MINI becomes a two-seater.

  • A soft-top made of fabric and plastic equals cleaner looks and better aerodyanamics for the cabriolet version of the new Porsche 911. The roof is supported on a magnesium frame for extra lightness.

  • The Smart Four-Us is basically a small pick-up with a built-in docking station for two electric Smart e-bikes.

  • This sleek, electrically-powered version of the latest Beetle has a range of 110 miles and can completely recharging in just 35 minutes. The new Combined Charging System that makes this possible has been developed in co-operation with Audi, BMW, Daimler, Porsche, Ford and General Motors/Opel.
