Take three: Bonkers holidays
  • You can't get more bizarre than this. The Dutch have recycled and oil rig survival pod into a hotel - if you can call it that! Originally built in 1972 they are 4.25 metres in diameter and unaltered apart from the addition of a lock on the outside and an ‘emergency’ chemical toilet inside.
Thanfully located on land near The Hague, the private pods are much more comfortable than their original purpose and fit up to three occupants for 60 Euros a night. This peculiar accommodation is far from conventional.

  • Are you tough enough to do time in Karostas prison? A former military prison in Latvia is open for overnight stays for those brave enough to spend the night in prison. The former military prison in Karostas Cietums, Latvia has remained unchanged since its beginnings in Tsarist times. Thankfully no longer in use for official guests, the prison is open from the 1st May to the 30th of September to visitors wanting to experience the harsh prison life in a variety of ways from a short overnight tour with handcuffs and an escort to your cell, to themed group activities. Arrival at the Naval Port prison is at 9 p.m., and the show lasts till 9 a.m. The event is intended for groups of 10 or more and costs just £10.
This is not your ordinary overnight stay and is certainly not luxurious accomodation but is sure to be an adventure to remember.

  • If you are a Star Wars fan then this is the perfect trip for you. Transport yourself to ‘a galaxy far, far away’ for just £6 a night, at the hotel used as Luke Skywalker’s home in Star Wars: A New Hope. The Sidi Driss hotel in Matamata, Tunisia is built out of 5 pit dwellings and the earthy silent tomb is a popular tourist landmark. The underground hotel is very basic but that doesn't deter hardcore Star Wars fans from visiting the location.
