San Diego - top five things to do
  • California's known for its beaches, and this one does not disappoint. Take a short ferry ride across the bay (an enjoyable experience in itself) or drive over the stunning Coronado bridge. Once you've arrived, you'll be wowed by the vast, unspoilt sands. If you're brave, take a dip in the chilly Pacific, or stroll down to one of the beachside resorts and grab a spot of lunch. Buy a ticket for the ferry on the harbour or on board.

  • Swing by Petco Park, home to the San Diego Padres. You'll be treated to incredible panoramic views if you sit in the bleachers, or a close up of the players if you opt for pitch-side seats. A great family atmosphere, check out what's on before you book, as you could get lucky and be treated to one of the impressive firework displays, or even better - $1 hot dog days. Buy your tickets here.

  • If you've hired out a car, put a day aside to go explore the surrounding area. San Diego is on the border of Mexico, and it's worth a drive in that direction as you're taken through the mountains. Alternatively, wind your way up to one of the national parks - Anza-Borrego Desert State Park or Joshua Tree National Park are worth a look.

  • This is one of America's longest-serving aircraft carriers and now a museum. Sit in the cockpit of a fighter jet, visit the kitchens and hear the stories from real people who worked onboard the ship. Set aside at least three hours - it's an huge ship with masses to see. Tickets here.
