Quirky Valentine Breaks
  • Go on a wet and wild date courtesy of The Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust. Check out the WWT's website to see the walks on offer at its nine wetland centres across the UK. Whether you've been together for ages or are on your first date, there'll be a walk to suit, filled with saucy facts about how wildlife and plants romance and compete for mates.

  • Knock your loved one off their feet FlowRiding at Cornwall's Retallack Resort & Spa. The hotel is offering adrenalin-fuelled couples the chance to experience this latest watersport craze, where participants surf or bodyboard on a permanent 12m artificial wave. And after all that fun, you can enjoy a couples spa treatment and romantic three-course dinner.
  • Take a break in Brighton – the British seaside resort first popularised as a hotspot for trysts by George IV in 1783 – and have your bodies immortalised at Brighton Body Casting. Capture your partner's lips in a pout, or cast your clasped hands for a very personal memento of Valentine's Day.
  • Go speed-dating on the slopes of Glencoe Mountain in the Scottish Highlands. The resort will be hosting a "ski-dating" speed-dating event on 13 February, where you can take a T-bar ride with prospective partners who share your love of snow sports and, if all goes well, ski into the future together.
  • More sedate speed-daters should head to the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth on 12 February. Fifty singletons will be feeling the love "Georgian Style" at a masked speed-dating event in one of the museum's galleries, where historic love letters will also be on display. Booking is essential, contact rowannah.martincottee@nmrn.org.uk.
  • Cosy up under the covers at the Pot-a-Doodle Do Wigwam Village in Northumbria. In February? Don't worry, these are fully heated wooden wigwams, furnished with luxurious cushions and sheepskin runs. And they'll be putting red roses on the pillow and Champagne on ice to get Valentine's guests feeling loved up.
  • Check into your own island at The House in the Sea. The elegant one-bed B&B at Newquay, owned by Lord and Lady Long and available through Unique Home Stays, is completely surrounded by the sea at high tide. So, no need to put up the do not disturb sign.
  • Check into Andaz Liverpool Street in London and have your kiss immortalised in a sketch by artist Rebecca Ivatts. She'll be sketching away as you dine, and you can take the work home on the night or order a large canvas version, which will be delivered four to six weeks later.
  • Brush up your flirting skills at a Valentine's Flirtshop organised by Skyros. The crash course in self-awareness will take place on the Isle of Wight from 11-13 February, which will aim to help you come out of your shell through games, role-play, coaching and discussion.
  • Take the trip of a lifetime. If that might break the bank, you'll have to pop the question first, in an original way, and catch it (or a re-enactment) on video for a chance to win an all-expenses-paid five-star honeymoon in Thailand with Great Hotels of the World. Go to Pure Honeymoon.
