Trim repair: Keeping your car alive
  • 1. I've owned this MINI Cooper S GP for over a year and this damage to the unique side sill has been on it since purchase. A replacement lower half of this sill costs £190 from BMW, so I was keen to look at a more cost-effective solution!

  • 2. After masking off the affected area of the sill, Steve the trim man rubs the damage back carefully with an orbital sander.

  • 3. This is what the damage looked like after Steve's orbital sander had done its work. He also spotted there was previously repaired damage here.

  • 4. On with the filler! Steve's using plastic padding to hide the damage and re-shape the offending area.

  • 5. After drying the area off with a heat gun, it's back to the orbital sander to remove the excess filler and smooth everything off.

  • 6. This is the clever bit! To get the pattern back in the plastic, Steve is using this specially mixed textured paint.

  • 7. Final bit of wet and drying to get the area ready for paint.

  • 8. On with the first coat of textured paint, it's looking good now. Just a last coat of factory matched satin black top coat to finish.

  • 9. Steve's almost finished now, this is the final coat going on.

  • 10. The finished job and you'd never really know there was any damage thanks to Steve and Chips Away. The best news was the price, which at £108 is over £80 cheaper than the new part. I was well chuffed!
