Cheapest (and priciest) Valentine's destinations
  • It seems odd that a party destination should make it to Kayak's list of the most popular Valentine's destinations, but the site points out that romantic dinners and quiet strolls on the beach aren’t everyone’s idea of a good time, and some people want to party with their nearest and dearest.
  • It’s not known as the home of romance - as your eyes meet over a plate of sausage and red cabbage.

However, in the winter, the Tiergarten is something of a winter wonderland of snow and ice, and then you’ll have all the excuse you need to warm up with kafee and kuchen.

  • Those who know it for stag nights and seedy nightlife options are forgetting the romantic illuminated canals, the museums and the quiet romance of the Vondelpark.

  • You can eat a romantic meal in one of the many restaurants and bars with a panoramic view of the city - with the Sao Jorge castle lit up in the centre and the Ponte 25 bridge twinkling in the distance.

And if you’re feeling particularly emotional you can catch some live Fado music - designed to tug on the heart strings more than a video clip on 'The Voice'.

  • If you skip the hen parties of Temple Bar, you can focus on the romance of walking the riverside, shopping in posh Grafton Street, and stopping off to view the remains of the actual St Valentine - on display in the Whitefriar Street Carmelite Church.
  • The list of the five priciest destinations starts with Malaga - in fifth place.

This is another surprising find on Kayak’s list of most popular Valentine’s destinations. It might be one for singletons looking to escape romantic couples, or for more creative romantics, who fancy taking a horse and carriage around Malaga Park - or admiring the view from the Alcazaba Citadel.

However, the fact that there’s a chance of some decent weather means you’ll pay more for Malaga at this time of year.

  • The city boasts a number of romantic attractions from the beautiful botanic gardens to the Nymphenburg Palace and Munich’s very own revolving restaurant.

However, it’s another pricey destination, so before you whisk your partner off it’s best to check whether she’d rather take a trip to Dublin instead.

  • It’s one of the most famous cities of romance, complete with gondola rides and strolls along romantic waterways, so you can expect to pay a bit of a premium for a break to Venice at the peak of the romance season.
  • It may not make you immediately think of romance, but if you’re after a balmy stroll along the beach, it’s one of your only weekend destination options at this time of year. As a result it’s one of the most expensive ones too.
  • Of course any list of the achingly overpriced wouldn’t be complete without Reykjavik. You might want to whisk your Valentine away to the outdoor spa naturally heated by the earth, or for a glimpse of the Northern Lights, but at £636 she’d better be worth it.
