  • Setting: Young architect Stan Bolt skilfully created this contemporary remake of a modernist house built in 1962 by Mervyn Seal, which sits at the top of a grand, tree-lined driveway in the middle of 12 acres of woodland.
    Bed: There are three guest rooms set in the hillside above the main house that feature sun decks, floor-to-ceiling windows, squishy bed and pillows, and stunning views.
    Breakfast: Is home-made granola, fresh fruit, mushrooms on toast, local sausages, pastries, and warm bread, served in Tony and Gordon's amazing open-plan living room from where you can admire the innovative architecture.

  • Setting: The Salt House is a very glamorous 'cube' overlooking the sea, just a short walk from arty St Ives.
    Breakfast: Is ordered from a menu and delivered to your room. You can choose from all sorts of yummy delights, including freshly-baked pastries, boiled eggs and soldiers and organic eggs, cornish bacon and grilled tomatoes on granary toast.
    Bed: There are two rooms, which are more akin to five-star hotel accommodation, with their Orla Kiely cushions, walk-in showers, free-standing baths, and sliding doors leading to ocean-view private balconies. That might explain the price, then...

  • Setting: Architects (and the owners who live above), Mike and Diana, have created a ode to modernism on England's East Coast.
    Bed: Only one room, so you get the stunning views, patio, sauna, living room, and indoor pool all to yourself!
    Breakfast: Take in a locally-sourced full English in the dining room or river-facing terrace, both with fabulous southerly views over the river, or in the courtyard garden adjacent to the guest bedroom, which is private and enjoys glorious morning sunshine.

  • Setting: Dannah Farm Country House is a luxurious boutique B&B on a working Chatsworth Estate Farm in the beautiful countryside of The Peak District National Park.
    Bed: Rooms here range from economical but comfortable, to sumptuous, with six-foot beds, double spa bath and wet room. There's also a Spa Leisure Cabin with a hot tub that can be hired out exclusively for the day.
    Breakfast: After a variety of fruit juice, cereals, yoghurt, fruit and muesli options,  fill up on freshly-cooked brekkies include bacon from the neighbouring farmer, home-produced eggs, and award-winning black pudding.

  • Setting: OK, so this isn't a B&B in the traditional sense, but it is a B&B, and it is architecturally-designed! The Curve is a tubular space with its own bathroom and dining area in the Launceston area of Cornwall.
    Bed: One room, with magnificent views over the rolling hills of the Cornwall countryside.
    Breakfast: A breakfast hamper awaits you every morning - simply pick it up and enjoy it on the deck.

  • Setting: This restored Victorian pub sits across the road from Smithfield Market, and has been pulling pints for locals for 100 years. In 2008 it turned its lock-ins to lie-ins and became a fashionable hotel 'above-stairs'.
    Bed: Six rooms named after local landmarks occupy the three upper floors and, as well as coming with luxury standard features - sumptuous duvets, luscious Miller Harris toiletries, ‘rainfall’ showers - it's the detail that brings them to life. Contemporary photographs of the rooms' namesakes turned into headboards and newly-upholstered antique chaise longs.
    Breakfast: Brekkie starts at £3.95 for a bacon roll, but £8.95 will get you the Full Monty. They also offer kippers, eggs on toast with smoked salmon, eggs Benedict and a 'City Boy' breakfast.

  • Setting: Paul Lightfoot and John MacEwan restored this Victorian townhouse near  Holyrood Rd (not far from the famous Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle) into a luxury guesthouse with contemporary touches like low-slung couches, wi-fi, whiskey-stocked honesty bar, and a fleet of bikes for carbon-neutral sightseeing.
    Bed: Rooms are a lofty white affair, wrapped in shades of grey — carpet, curtains, throws — punctuated by carefully chosen pieces of colourful contemporary furniture.
    Breakfast: In the house’s orangery (that’s posh-Scottish for conservatory), which looks out onto a private walled garden, Lightfoot and MacEwan serve eggs Florentine and blueberry pancakes.

  • Setting: Upton House is an adults-only luxury five-star spot overlooking the Fowey estuary. The onus here is on fabulous interior design, and a distinct, decadent 1920s vibe will greet you upon arrival.
    Bed: Each of the five different-themed boudoirs boasts Penhaligon's goodies, Hotel Chocolat truffles, and handmade pocket sprung beds,  and while some have roll-top baths, others boast  rain showers.
    Breakfast: Your food comes in heart shapes (pancakes with strawberries), delivered by The Upton Girl. This is service with a smile - and a frilly apron!

  • Setting: With stunning views of the Loch Tay, The Rock House sits in 50 acres  of woodland, two miles from the picturesque village of Kenmore, and boasts its own stretch of beach where you can light fires and ear fresh barbecued fish.
