Brilliant days out around the UK for half term
  • Take a masterclass in making organic gelato at Dri Dri in London's Notting Hill. At this delicious workshop, which will take place every afternoon from Monday to Friday in half-term, kids and their parents will be able to whisk up some ice cream to take home, put fruits, nuts and chocolates to the taste-test while learning about their origins, and design a label for the gourmet treat.
  • Head to Bodiam Castle in East Sussex and take up the challenge of Sir Edward's Quest. From 19 and 27 February, between 10.30am and 3pm, kids will be able to learn all about the atmospheric 13th-century castle with moat by following a trail around its grounds. There'll be a special prize for their endeavours at the end, too.
  • Learn about how animated films are made from Jim Parkyn, one of the team who created Wallace & Gromit, at Spaceport on Merseyside, at a special workshop on 19 and 20 February. Kids will also receive step-by-step tips to make their own models of Gromit to take home. There's a competition, too, where the creator of the best model of an alien will win a masterclass by Jim Parkyn for their school. Meanwhile, Wallace & Gromit will be on hand throughout the week recalling their "Grand Day Out", and displaying sets from their award-winning adventures.
  • Calling all time travellers. Take a journey through the centuries on the Tudor Family Fun Trail at Audley End House and Gardens in Essex. Kids can discover facts about some of the world's most interesting inventions and along the way learn about the history of time and the origins of medicine. From Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 4pm.
  • Take part in an air-sea rescue and discover how the Royal Air Force mounts such operations in treacherous conditions. Kids can experience being marooned in a life raft and learn survival skills, from 11am to 2pm, 21-25 February at Royal Air Force Museum Cosford in Shropshire.
  • See stars at At-Bristol's special planetarium show, Winter Night Sky. The star-gazing spectacular will be led by a presenter who will reveal how to identify the constellations, including the Seven Sisters and Orion's Belt. Under-fives can also take part in the planetarium's "Little Stars" shows.
  • Young photographers should take some snaps of the free-roaming inhabitants of Trentham Monkey Forest this half term. Caption your photo and send it in for the chance to win a prize for the photograph that captures the essence of this extraordinary wildlife park and its inhabitants. Professional photographer Martin Elliot will be out and about at the forest to help budding paparazzi with hints and tips on how to create a great photo.
  • Get a taste of the action at the New Forest Activities Booking Centre on 22 and 24 February. These special adventure days for children will include archery, orienteering and canoeing. Learn how to use a bow and arrow, take a woodland walk picking up orienteering and problem-solving skills, then head out on the Beaulieu River in canoes to explore the creeks and learn about the wildlife.
  • Discover the stories behind the paintings that hang on the walls of Hampton Court Palace. From 19-27 February, warders will lead a kid-friendly portrait trail to find out about the characters captured in paint and the artists who studied their likenesses. There'll even be an arts and crafts workshop, too. And at 11am and 2am on 24 to 27 February, special performances will take place to tell the stories of the jesters and fools in the court of King Henry VIII.
  • Try your luck in the Lego house-building competition at W5 in Belfast on Saturday 26 February. The team that is quickest to create a home in The Big Build Challenge will win a prize. And W5's huge collection of Lego bricks will be available for visitors to build other structures that take their fancy.
