Police officer seriously hurt after car crashes into motorway bridge during stop

A police officer has been seriously hurt after his car crashed into a motorway bridge while stopping a vehicle.

The crash happened when officers attempted to stop a Seat Ibiza on the M62 eastbound as it entered Humberside on Friday night, West Yorkshire Police said.

A male police officer suffered serious leg injuries and had to be cut free from his car.

He was taken to hospital where he remains in a serious but non-life threatening condition.

Firefighters also rescued two men from the Seat Ibiza, which had four occupants.

Police said three of the occupants were hurt, with one suffering neck and back injuries and two others suffering minor injuries.

All four people from the Seat Ibiza were arrested and remain in custody.

West Yorkshire Police said in a statement: “At 11.24pm last night (Friday 3 September) West Yorkshire Police officers attempted to stop a vehicle on the M62 eastbound as it entered the Humberside area.

“As a result of this there was a collision between the vehicle and two police vehicles. One of the police vehicles left the carriageway and was in collision with a bridge stanchion.

“A police officer suffered serious leg injuries as a result and he was taken to hospital where he remains in a serious but non-life threatening condition.”

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service added in a statement: “Crews from Selby and neighbouring appliance Goole responded to reports of a two vehicle road traffic collision involving a police response vehicle and a Seat Ibiza.

“1 Male officer was extricated from the vehicle with serious injuries and transported to hospital. 4 male occupants in Seat Ibiza, 2 of which were out upon our arrival.

“Crews extricated the other 2 males who were then taken to hospital by ambulance.

“The crews used edraulic cutters, stabilisation equipment, lighting, sharps protection, reciprocating saw, IEC Kit, First aid, neck collars and small tools.”

The M62 eastbound, junction 34 – to junction 35, near Goole, was closed overnight causing traffic and will remain shut as the investigation continues.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct has been notified about the crash.
